This year, more than 1,300 unmarked graves have been found across the site of five former residential schools.

An act of cultural genocide, and a terrible stain on Canada’s troubled history, the number of unmarked graves is expected to rise even further with several ongoing investigations.

Faced with the enormity of the situation, and the extent of such unimaginable suffering, many of us are lost for words - and don’t know what to do.

So on this special National Day for Truth and Reconciliation - from a place of humility and reverence for victims of this unprecedented tragedy - here are a few suggestions for meaningful steps you can take.

  1. Learn the land acknowledgement in your region

  1. Find out if there was a residential school where you live

  1. Learn a greeting in a local indigenous language
