Tottenham Hotspur welcome Italian giants AC Milan on Wednesday night in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 fixture.

The pregame narrative: 1-0 down from the first leg, Tottenham’s inconsistency and weakened defence could prove costly against AC Milan, and veteran striker Olivier Giroud in particular.

Tottenham Hotspur vs AC Milan odds and best bets

Best Bet : AC Milan or Tie (-112)

Spurs will get a much needed boost from the return to the dugout of manager Antonio Conte, but the north London side come into Wednesday night’s clash on the back of two lackluster defeats.

Tottenham fell 1-0 to Championship side Sheffield United in the FA Cup in midweek and then lost by the same scoreline to Wolves in the League Saturday.

Now out of both domestic cups and 18 points off league leader Arsenal, the Champions League represents Tottenham's last remaining hope of silverware this season.

So Milan’s record of only one win in their last 14 away games in the knockout stages will give Spurs fans reason to believe.

But Conte’s side will need to come out and attack to make up for that one goal deficit, meaning their already weakened defense will be exposed for long periods throughout the match.

Factor in that Tottenham are missing goalkeeper Hugo Lloris through injury AND center back Eric Dier through suspension, and the stage set for an AC Milan victory on the night.

Key stat:  Spurs have lost each of their last four Champions League knockout fixtures, and failed to find the net in each of those defeats.

Quick picks

Harry Kane to score (+145): If anyone is going to break the deadlock for Tottenham it's Harry Kane, and the England striker will set a new club record for Champions League appearances on Wednesday night.

Kane is the second highest scorer in the Premier League this season on 18 goals, but he’s scored only once in the Champions League so far this campaign.

Olivier Giroud to score (+290): 36 year-old Olivier Giroud already has four goals and two assists for AC Milan in the Champions League this season, and the Ex-Arsenal striker likes nothing better than banging them in against Tottenham.

Giroud has four career goals against Spurs from his time at Arsenal and Chelsea, and that extensive Premier League experience could prove deadly against Tottenham’s overstretched back line.
