Record and rivalries in NCAA women’s gymnastics
It’s Tuesday and today we’re taking to the bars and beams to get a look at what’s happening in the world of NCAA women’s gymnastics…
As the postseason and conference championships draw ever closer, things are hotting up with a slew of perfect ten’s recorded in the last few days, and some serious drama playing out at the top of the national rankings.
The Oklahoma women's gymnastics team has been in a class of its own all season, with Florida, Michigan and Utah battling it out for the next three spots.
A little further down the rankings, Missouri and Arizona state have also been making big moves of late, with both teams currently in seeded spots heading into the regionals.
But last night No.2-ranked Michigan put in a stunning performance to upset No.1-ranked Oklahoma. The victory at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, avenged a Week 1 loss in the reverse fixture and saw Michigan State secure only its second 198+ of the season.
The question now is: can the Michigan women's gymnastics team hold onto that No.2 spot when it travels to Georgia for the last game of the regular season on Friday?
The other big news from the weekend was two record-breaking performances from Oregon State's Jade Carey and Cal freshman eMjae Frazier.
Carey’s ten on the beam on Saturday saw her become one of only 13 women gymnasts in history to complete a ‘gym slam’, racking up a perfect 10 on every event at least once. It’s worth noting that Jade Carey and Trinity Thomas are now the only active gymnasts to have accomplished that feat.
Also on Saturday eMjae Frazier notched a perfect 10 on floor - becoming the first Golden Bear in the program's history to do so. Frazier's first career perfect 10 also helped Cal pull off a program record 49.700 on the exercise.
There’s still plenty more drama to come before the end of the regular season, and you can get up to date with all the action in women's college gymnastics at 10:30 p.m. ET tonight on ESPNU.
