Rebecca Marino at the Monterrey Open plus more top tennis action
WTA Monterrey Open
Happy Monday women’s sports fans. Today we’re serving up a feast of tennis.
Now in its 15th edition, the Monterrey Open is back this week, with the WTA 250 series tournament running from February 27th to March 5th.
Defending champion Leylah Fernandez - who won the last TWO competitions in Monterrey - won’t be back in to defend her title, but big names such as Caroline Garcia, Marie Bouzková, Donna Vekić, Elise Mertens and Lin Zhu will all be on show in Mexico.
World No.5 Garcia is the number one seed, and the 29 year old will be in action tomorrow for an opening round clash against Kaja Juvan.
In today’s busy schedule Canada’s Rebecca Marino will take on home favorite Contreras Gómez with both players looking to make a big impact in Mexico.
Despite battling through multiple qualifying rounds, Marino hasn't picked up a single main draw win in her last three tournaments. Likewise Gomez has suffered four straight defeats despite giving Alycia Parks a scare in Merida last week.
After winning the Hua Hin Tennis Championship in Thailand 5th seed Zhu Lin crashed out of the Merinda Open in the first round. The 29 year old will be looking to bounce back in Mexico today when she takes on Anna Bondár of Hungary.
World No.30 Marie Bouzková is the 2nd seed in Monterey, and the Czech tennis ace will kick off her tournament against Anna Karolína of Slovakia today.
And Jule Niemeier will also be in action today as the German seeks to shake off a poor start to the year, with only two wins across six different tournaments.
You can catch all of today's drama in Mexico on Tennis Channel and TVA Sports.
