Initial Thoughts

Real Madrid face a season-defining week as Carlo Ancelotti’s side take on Osasuna in the final of the Copa del Rey on Saturday, before welcoming Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.

The Narrative

Real Madrid against Osasuna would normally be a no-brainer. But Los Blancos are having an unusual season domestically, and results in La Liga have been on the slide for some time.

Ancelotti’s side flew out of the blocks back in August, racking up ten wins and a draw from their first 11 games of the season and well on course to retain the Spanish title.

But results began to suffer either side of the World Cup allowing Barcelona to pull away at the top of the table.

Xavi’s side are now a whopping 13 points clear, and last weekend Real dropped into 3rd place for the first time this season.

Since losing 2-1 to the Catalan giants back in March, Real have lost 50% of their eight matches in the Spanish top flight.

That patchy form may well give Osasuna a glimmer of hope heading into Saturday’s Copa del Rey final at La Cartuja in Seville, with the Pamplona outfit seeking to lift the trophy for the first time in their history.

Nuts and Bolts

Real Madrid may have been crowned the UCL champions five times in the last decade, but they haven't won  Spain’s domestic Cup since way back in the 2013/14 season.

Real’s Copa del Rey record against Osasuna is strong though, with Ancelotti’s side unbeaten in their eight previous meetings in the competition.

Madrid ran out 2-0 winners last time they met in the league, with Marco Asensio and Federico Valverde both finding the net on the night.

But in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, a Kike Garcia strike just after half time was enough for Osasuna to come away from the Bernabéu with a point.

Kike is the top scorer in this year’s Copa del Rey with five goals overall, and with Real conceded eight times in their last three matches anything is possible in Saturday night’s game.

Both teams to score (-113)

Strange things happen in cup finals. But Real losing them is a very rare beast. Los Blancos are pretty inconsistent right now, so it’s a question of whether their league form will creep into Saturday’s final. Either way Osasuna may well give Ancelotti’s side a run for their money in this matchup.

Kike Garcia Over 0.5 shots on target (+104)

Having scored against Real earlier in the season and currently the competition’s top scorer, we’re backing Kike to have at least one shot on target against Los Blancos in the Copa del Rey final.
