Initial Thoughts

RB Leipzig will host Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-final of the German Cup on Wednesday, with both sides looking to bounce back from disappointing league defeats on the weekend.

The Narrative

RB Leipzig are in the midst of a dreadful run of form, having failed to find the net in any of their last three outings and conceding a whopping ELEVEN goals in the process.

Granted, seven of those came in a one-sided Champions League defeat away to Manchester city last month. But since then Marco Rose’s side have also lost 1-0 to VfL Bochum, who are only four points above the drop zone, and suffered a 3-0 defeat to Mainz in front of their home fans.

Leipzig have racked up only a single win since late February and have failed to keep a clean sheet at home since October last year.

5th in the Bundesliga, Rose’s side could have leapfrogged SC Frieberg into the last Champions League place with a win on the weekend. But another heavy loss leaves The Red Bulls just four points clear of last season’s Europa League finalist Eintracht Frankfurt in 6th.

RB Leipzig overcame Frieberg to lift the DFB-Pokal trophy last season, but Rose’s men will need to radically up their game if they hope to defend that German Cup title this campaign.

Dortmund could have extended their slender lead at the top of the table in a six-pointer against Bayern Munich on Saturday. But the away side were defeated 4-2 on the night and looked second best in every department in Thomas Tuchel’s first game in charge of the reigning Bundesliga champions.

Prior to that loss BVB have been flying though, with Edin Terzić’s side winning nine of their last ten Bundesliga matches.

Nuts and Bolts

Dortmund scored two or more goals in nine of those ten encounters and come into this match as favorites on Wednesday night.

And there should be no shortage of goals in this DFB-Pokal clash too, as the last six encounters between these two sides have produced 24 goals in total.

Dortmund hold the lead in the head to head record, with BVB having come out on top in eight of the last 15 matches between the two sides.

Dortmund ran out 2-1 winners when they last met in the league in early March. But The Red Bulls produced a dominant 3-0 victory in the reverse fixture early in the season.

All odds courtesy of Northstar Bets

Both teams to score (-186)

Dortmund have found the net in every game this year, and RB Leipzig have failed to score at home only once all season.

RB Leipzig or tie (-335)

Leipzig beat Dortmund last time they played them at home, and after that poor showing against Bayern last weekend, we’re backing Marco Rose to mastermind an upset against his previous club on Wednesday night.
