Manchester City kicks off its Champions League defence

September 19, 2023

In the UEFA Champions League group stage clash between Manchester City and Red Star Belgrade, all eyes were on the defending champions, Man City. The big question on everyone's mind was whether City could retain the same hunger and passion that propelled them to a historic treble-winning season. As we discussed in Room 442, the challenge for City this season was clear – maintaining the intensity they displayed during their Champions League triumph last year. So far, in the Premier League, they've been nothing short of spectacular, with five wins in five games and 15 points, placing them at the top of the table. The question now is, can they sustain this momentum in the Champions League?

Pep Guardiola's men have been absolutely brilliant in the Premier League, securing five consecutive wins and amassing 15 points. This impressive run has placed them firmly at the summit of the Premier League table. However, the real test lies in whether they can carry this form into the Champions League. Guardiola acknowledged the difficulty of repeating their success from the previous season, emphasizing that while it may not be easy, the pressure on City is less than what for example PSG is experiencing.

As defending champions, Manchester City faces the weight of expectations, but they have already proven their mettle. They enter this season with the confidence of having achieved the pinnacle of European football. The challenge for them now is to maintain their dominance and further solidify their status as European giants. The pressure on City is not to be underestimated, but they seem well-equipped to handle it.

Red Star Belgrade, on the other hand, is a team that tends to concede goals. This presented an opportunity for Manchester City to secure an easy three points. Notably, City made two crucial re-signings in Bernardo Silva and Kyle Walker. During the summer, there were discussions about the possible departures of these players, with Kyle Walker linked to Bayern Munich and Bernardo Silva rumored to be heading to Barcelona. However, both players decided to remain with the City team, which is a testament to their commitment and belief in the project.

City's attacking prowess is of course highlighted by  Erling Haaland. The young striker has seamlessly continued where he left off, adding seven goals to his tally already. With Haaland in the mix, City's attacking options are once again formidable this season.Manchester City's start to the season has been nothing short of outstanding, both in the Premier League and on the European stage. Their quest to retain the Champions League title remains a significant challenge, but with their talent, experience, and the hunger they've displayed so far, they are a force to be reckoned with. As they face Red Star Belgrade, the odds seem to be in their favor, but in football, surprises are always possible. The rest of Europe will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on City's journey as they aim to continue their reign as champions.
