Jessie Fleming stars as Chelsea Women chase the WSL top spot
The action is heating up in the FA Women’s Super League!
Chelsea Women vs. Leicester Women: Wed May 10 @ 2 p.m. ET Optus Sport
Leicester Women’s 2022/23 WSL campaign has very much been a season of two halves. The Foxes endured nine straight defeats between September and December, before finally getting some points on the board in mid January in a 3-0 defeat of Brighton and Hove Albion.
Since then Willie Kirk’s side have racked up four wins and a draw from their 10 league games in 2023, but Leicester are still perilously close to the drop and head into tomorrow’s matchup second from bottom on the table with 13 points.
The Foxes have won two of their last three matches though, and with four games left to play Kirk will hope his team has enough recent momentum to maintain their top flight status next season.
But it’ll be a massive test tomorrow night against Chelsea, with Emma Hayes' side firing on all cylinders in their hunt for yet another Women’s Super League title.
After becoming the only side this season to frustrate Barcelona at the Nou Camp in a 1-1 draw that ultimately saw them eliminated from the Champions League, Chelsea have bounced back in style domestically.
Emma Hayes’ side beat both Merseyside clubs back to back - overcoming Liverpool in a tight 2-1 matchup before putting seven past the Toffees last weekend.
Jessie Fleming played a key role in the rout, serving up a goal and an assist at the Kingsmeadow Stadium. And that strike just before the half time whistle brought the Canadian’s tally for the season into double digits in all competitions.
In form like this it's hard to see how the Foxes’ backline will be able to withstand another Chelsea onslaught tomorrow.
The Programme pick: Jessie Fleming anytime goal (+105)
Brighton & Hove Albion Women vs. Arsenal Women: Wed May 10 @ 2:30 p.m. ET Sportsnet Now Plus, Sportsnet World, Sportsnet Now, Sportsnet World Now
Brighton & Hove Albion parted ways with manager Amy Merricks after the south coast club failed to secure a single victory in seven league matches this year.
But since being installed in early April, new head coach Melissa Phillips has transformed the club’s fortunes with two wins and a draw from her four games in charge.
Now 9th in the table and 6 points clear of bottom club Reading, the Seagulls are in a strong position to maintain their WSL status next season with only three games left to play.
Tomorrow they’ll host highflying Arsenal who’ve won five of their last six outings and are currently in hot pursuit of the Champions league places.
Currently in 4th place on 41 points, the Gunners have two games in hand on both third place Manchester City and league leaders Manchester United.
With 12 points till on the table, Jonas Eidevall’s side know a WSL title is still just about within their reach, and the Gunners head into Wednesday night’s matchup a strong favourites for the win.
But Brighton are much improved under Melissa Phillips, under whom the Seagulls have won both of their last two matches at home.
So could we see an upset at Broadfield Stadium tomorrow?
The Programme Pick: Both teams to score (+110)
