Initial Thoughts

Juventus with three wins on the bounce against Inter with three straight defeats. Can Simone Inzaghi’s side flip the script to secure a morale boosting Coppa Italia win against on Tuesday?

The Narrative

Somehow still in the Champions League places after some seriously patchy form this year, Inter have lost four of their last three games in the Italian top flight.

To make matters worse, the last two of those defeats came in front of their own fans, in games where Simone Inzaghi’s side completely dominated possession.

And to make matters worse still, Saturday’s loss against Fiorentina featured an astonishing open goal miss from Romelu Lukaku, who somehow failed to find the net from only two yards out with the entire goal at his mercy.

Inter have suffered ten defeats in Serie A this season - that’s six more than they dropped across the entire 2-21/22 campaign.

And having come up second best in consecutive league games against 17th placed Spezia, 9th placed Fiorentino and 7th placed Juve, Inter have lost three Serie A ties on the bounce for the first time in six seasons.

Inzaghi’s side have also failed to score in their last 270 minutes of top flight football, which doesn’t feel like the best way to prepare for the first leg of a Coppa Italia semi-final tie against a hated rival.

Tuesday night will mark the third Derby d'Italia of the 2022/23 campaign, with Max Allegri’s Juventus having already beaten Inter twice in the league this season.

Nuts and Bolts

Juventus are on a five game winning streak, having racked up Serie A wins against Verona, Inter and Sampdoria as well as beating SC Frieberg home and away in the Europa League.

Allegri’s side kept clean sheets in four of those five wins, and have racked up seven wins in their eight league outings.

Juve are only six points behind Inter who currently occupy the last Champions league spot, which already looks like a huge achievement given the club’s 15-point penalty imposed for financial indiscretions.

And both sides are still battling it out in Europe this season, with Juve awaiting a Europa League quarter final against Sporting Lisbon and Inter readying to face Benfica in the Champions League.

Juve have already beaten Inter 1-0 and 2-0 this season, but Inter have a habit of coming out on top in the fixture when the stakes are high.

The Milan side beat Juve to the title in the 2020/21 season and last campaign they overcame Allegri’s team in both the Supercoppa and Coppa Italia finals.

Meetings between these two old foes tend to get more than a little spicy, with both sides receiving a straight red when they last met before the international break.

Inter moneyline (+215)

With just a single goal between them and Inter dominating possession in their last meeting, we’re backing underdogs Inter for the win on Tuesday night.

Both teams to score (-107)

Juve have scored in 11 of their last 12 games in all competitions, and Inter will be desperate to find the net in front of their home fans.

Red Card given (+280)

Both sides have seen three red cards in their last two fixtures, so expect another sending off in this high stakes Coppa Italia clash.
