Herdman makes waves in 2023
It was some year for the Canadian soccer fan. Women's World Cup's, Christine Sinclair's retirement, to the men. Ah yes, the men.
After an incredible 2022, then wheels fell off the men's program. Capitulation to rivals the USA in the Nations League early in the year was only magnified with a quarterfinal loss to the same USA in the Gold Cup.
John Herdman who had engineered the turn-around for the program, leading it to the World Cup had, had enough. Over the summer, a few months after he had allegedly spoken to New Zealand about their coaching vacancy, he resigned as Head Coach of Canada, accepting an offer to take over Toronto FC.
TFC's season had been a nightmare, in fact statistically it was the worst in club history. Herdman arrives with a huge job, namely to fix the culture, a broken and toxic culture.
Herdman made headlines again, when in an interview with the CBC he admitted that he should never have gone to the World Cup with Canada, that following the death of his sister, he was in no fit mental state.
It was a bombshell that rocked Canadian soccer.
