Drama at the IIHF Women's World Championship
IIHF Women's World Championship Quarterfinals TSN1
At the IIHF Women's World Championship, Canada is looking for its fourth major tournament in under two years. But Troy Ryan’s side made it hard work for themselves against Team USA in yesterday’s final group A matchup.
3-1 up and controlling the game, Canada allowed its heated rival to draw level late in the third, with the drama compounded by a broken stadium clock and an equaliser inside the final thirty seconds.
Birthday girl Ann-Renée Desbiens came to Canada's rescue in the shootout, stopping eight of nine shots, on top of the 26 saves she produced during regulation and overtime.
Forward Jamie Lee Rattray stepped up to win it for Canada in the ninth round, sending the home nation to the top of the group and through to Thursday’s quarter finals against Sweden.
Team Canada has now come out on top in all but one of the last seven meetings with the U.S. at Olympics and world championships, and the two sides will likely face each other in Sunday’s gold medal game.
IIHF Women's World Championship Quarterfinal matchups:
- Canada vs. Sweden
- Czech Republic vs. Finland

With 2023’s first major tournament teeing off next Wednesday, the LPGA tour heads to Hawaii this week for the for LOTTE Championship presented by Hoakalei.
This tournament at the Hoakalei Country Club in Ewa Beach will play host to eleven major winners, including world No. 9 Hyo Joo Kim, who will be aiming to defend the title she won in Hawaii last year, as well as world No. 7 and two-time LOTTE champion Brooke Henderson.
Hyo Joo Kim shot 11-under to finish two strokes ahead of her closest rival at the 2022 event, racking up her fifth major victory in the LPGA Tour.
The 27 year old is yet to finish outside the top 10 this season and is the bookies’ favourite to claim the title and make it back-to-back LOTTE Championship wins this week.
But Brooke Henderson will have other ideas, as the Canadian arrives having just secured her 13th LPGA win at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions.
Henderson has already claimed back-to-back titles in Hawaii - scooping the title in both the 2018 and 2019 seasons. And she won both by a huge four strokes margin, so don’t rule out another big performance from the world No. 7 this week.
