Will there be a wave of red, white, blue … and orange this Sunday at Royal St. Georges?

This is the 15th time Royal St. Georges hosts the Open Championship. And the venue has a habit of producing some unconventional winners.  In 2011, Darren Clarke became the oldest person to hoist the coveted Claret Jug since 1967.  And back in 2003, a rookie named Ben Curtis won the Open, becoming the first player in 90 years to win the first major golf championship he ever played.

These results inspired the team here at The Parleh to pick some dark horses for the latest instalment of golf’s oldest tournament.

Rickie Fowler - the man credited with making Orange cool again - has long been considered one of the best players to never win a major.  Well, after looking more weekend warrior than PGA pro for the past 2 years, his game has been trending in the right direction.  And Rickie placed T5 in 2011 at this venue.  He’s offering terrific value at +6500.

Another image-conscious golf star - Ian Poulter - who boasts an impressive collection of plaid pants and sports cars - is seeking his first ever major and comes in hot.  The Ryder Cup legend looks to be peaking at the right time with a 4th place finish last week in Scotland and he boasts 3 top 10s in the Open.  Poulter is an attractive +8000 to hoist the Claret Jug on Sunday.

Treacherous rough, cavernous bunkers and not a flat lie to be found at this venerable course.  So expect the unexpected and take a flyer on Fowler and Poulter.

Here are the picks:

  • Rickie Fowler +6500
  • Ian Poulter +8000
