As they prepare for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year, the Canadian men’s national team will wrap up their June international window with a bout against Honduras in San Pedro Sula Monday evening, a Nations League match which could prove to be tricky.

Canada enters Monday’s match fresh off a 4-0 victory over Curaçao. In his first match for Les Rouges since November, Alphonso Davies scored a brace, while Steven Vitória and Lucas Cavallini also found the back of the net.

Historically, Honduras holds the slight edge over Canada (11-8-8) but haven’t beaten them since John Herdman’s appointment in 2018. The last time these two teams met was back on January 27 in Honduras, when Jonathan David’s golazo – off a brilliant feed from Liam Fraser – helped hand Canada the 2-0 victory in World Cup Qualifying.

Honduras enters Monday’s match having won just once in its last 16 games; the Honduran side finished dead last in the final stage of World Cup Qualifying, winning a grand total of zero of their 14 matches. It’s a team that’s in flux, transitioning away from the side which saw them make back-to-back World Cup appearances a decade ago.

That team is long gone, and so is the treacherous environment in Honduras that used to strike fear down the spines of their opposition. Once regarded as the most difficult place for opponents to visit in CONCACAF, the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitan has been anything but for Honduras of late. They’ve lost six straight at home, with their last win coming all the way back in November 2019, a 4-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago in Nations League. They’ll be hoping to end that near-three-year drought on Monday.

With COVID-19 restrictions loosened from the last time these two teams met earlier this year, Honduras could see a livelier environment with more fans in the stands than in recent games, though with not much to play for, that remains to be seen. What will certainly be a factor, however, is the humidity – something Canada has struggled to overcome, even through their top-of-the-table WCQ run.

Canada won just two out of seven away matches in World Cup Qualifying, including back-to-back road defeats to Costa Rica and Panama to spoil their bid at an undefeated cycle. This trip to Honduras will be anything but a walk in the park for the Canadians.

Kickoff is at 10 p.m. ET.
