Canada’s historic win over Panama means they are one step closer to qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. That night at BMO Field was special for a number of reasons – let’s dive into them.

After going down early, Canada – as they’ve shown on so many occasions – would not give in, and with the roaring crowd of 30,000 passionate national team supporters behind them, they clawed back and willed their way to an equalizer, sending BMO Field into a frenzy – an environment that would only get louder as the night wore on.

Of course, as there is in any respectable CONCACAF environment, there was a bit of shithousery from the home side – leading to the benches clearing for a brief scuffle to end the first half.

But then came that moment – one that will surely go down in national team history – a moment that brought the nation together and to its feet with one mutual emotion at the forefront: belief.

Alphonso Davies, looking like Andre DeGrasse, sprinted about 20 yards to somehow, some way to strip a Panamanian player of the ball while keeping it in-bounds before executing the one thing he had in mind from the jump: scoring an absolute golazo that only someone like the 20-year-old phenom could score.

From that point on, the rest of the team started to believe as well and the floodgates flew open. Tajon Buchanan and Jonathan David would cap off the scoring and cap off what was a magical night along the Lakeshore in Toronto, as the men’s national team have one foot in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

But the journey’s not quite finished yet. Canada have 8 games remaining – including two next month and Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta.
