Canada Women on for a three-peat?
Ons Jabeur vs. Lesia Tsurenko 6:15 p.m. ET Tennis Channel, TVA Sports
World No. 2 Ons Jabeur killed it in 2022, but the Tunisian ace is struggling to maintain that winning form in 2023.
Jabeur won the Madrid Open and made it all the way to the final in Charleston last year but recent months have seen her crash out of successive competitions in the opening rounds.
At the Australian Open she was eliminated by World No. 83 Marketa Vondrousova in the second round, and then lost to Vondrousova again in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open.
The Tunisian was also dumped out of the Miami Open in the second round and she comes into today’s clash at the Charleston Open badly needing a win to get her season back on track.
Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko kicked off her campaign in South Carolina with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 over Paula Ormaechea. Tsurenko's serve remained unbroken throughout the entirety of the matchup and in form like this she definitely has a shot against an out of sorts Jabeur.
This will be the first main draw meeting between the two players, although they have met once in the qualifying stages of Dubai Tennis Championships back in 2018, when Tsurenko came out on top with a straight sets victory on the day.
On paper Ons Jabeur is far and away the stronger player here and her game very much favours the clay surface, but Tsurenko will believe she can upset the odds in what should be a fascinating clash in Charleston this evening.
The Programme Pick: Ons Jabeur in three sets (+275)
2023 Women's World Hockey Championship: Canada vs. Switzerland Wed 7 p.m. ET TSN3, TSN5
Brampton, Ontario will host this week’s 2023 Women's World Hockey Championship with the competition back on Canadian soil for the first time since 2021.
And two-time reigning champions Team Canada look like strong contenders for a three-peat, with a roster literally bursting with talent.
Canada Women are the reigning Olympic gold medalists, having also claimed consecutive silver medals between 2013 and 2017 as well as scooping bronze in 2019.
And if that weren’t impressive enough, Team Canada also came out on top in the most recent seven-game Rivalry Series against the U.S.
For team captain Marie-Philip Poulin 2020 was a career best season. The 32 year old not only claimed an Olympic and world championship but also received the Northern Star Award as Canada’s Athlete of the Year.
Canada will play in Group A alongside tomorrow’s opponent Switzerland, as well as Japan, Czechia and arch rivals USA.
Canada and the United States have faced each all in but one of the gold medal matches at the women’s worlds, and there’s every chance the two sides will line up against each other at this year’s competition as well.
In tomorrow night’s opening match against Switzerland, expect Team Canada to kick off this tournament with a bang…
The Programme Pick: Canada Women Over 7.5 (-114)
