Initial Thoughts

Another massive final, another record-breaking crowd. The womens’ game continues its upward trajectory as the perennially dominant Barcelona take Wolfsburg in the Champions League final on Saturday.

The Narrative

Having missed out on the German title by just two points to Bayern Munich, Wolfsburg Women will now turn their attention to the small matter of the UCL Final.

Having already been victorious in the DFB-Pokal final against Freiburg last month, Tommy Stroot’s side are seeking their second piece of silverware of the season.

Saturday’s final will be held at the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven, and the 34,000 tickets sold represents a record turnout for the womens’ game in the Netherlands.

Barcelona already have two trophies to their name this season after cruising to yet another league title and lifting the Spanish Super Cup back in January.

Saturday’s final will be Barca’s fourth in five years, while Wolfsburg will be contesting their sixth UCL showpiece.

Nuts and Bolts

After lifting the Champions League trophy in 2021, Barca were defeated in last season’s final after three early goals saw them run out 3-1 losers against Lyon.

And it was Lyon who also came out on top the last time Wolfsburg featured in a UCL final at the end of the 2020 season.

Wolfsburg arrive in Saturday’s matchup unbeaten in their last 11 Champions League matches. But their last defeat on the continual stage came courtesy of the Catalan giants in a 5-1 drubbing at the Camp Nou back in April 2022.

Aside from that semi-final defeat last year, the German side actually boasts a strong record against Barcelona, winning each of the four previous meetings in the Champions League.

And there’s more good news for Tommy Stroot’s side. After a shock 2-1 defeat to Madrid CFF in the final game of the season, Barca’s 64-game unbeaten run in the Spanish top flight finally came to an end two weeks ago.

On top of that, Fridolina Rolfo and Lucy Bronze are both touch and go for the Champions League showpiece, as is Alexia Putella who’s made just a handful of appearances from the bench since returning from a serious injury.

So could that recent defeat and a depleted squad cause Barcelona Women to wobble in Saturday’s final? Wolfsburg will certainly be hoping so.
