2022-23 Rivalry Series goes to Game Seven
2022-23 Rivalry Series Game 7: Canada vs. USA
There’s rivalries and then there’s Canada and USA on the ice. The two sides have faced off in six of seven Winter Olympics finals and 20 of 21 IIHF Women’s World Championships.
And now, in a clash that reads like a Hollywood blockbuster, the 2022-23 Rivalry Series is going all the way to game seven, after serious heroics from both teams.
Team USA racked up three wins on the bounce in the opening rounds of the series, only for Canada Women to bounce back with three consecutive wins of their own to set up a massive winner-takes-all matchup at Place Bell in Laval, Quebec tonight.
In Canada’s 5-1 win on Monday night veteran team captain Marie-Philip Pouline became only the fifth Canadian player to reach 200 points, while Rebecca Johnston, who contributed two assists, made her first appearance since last year's Olympic triumph.
The reigning Olympic champion will take on the reigning World champions at 7 p.m. ET and you can follow the action live on TSN.
Dubai Open: Aryna Sabalenka vs. Jelena Ostapenko
Aryna Sabalenka will take on former French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko at the Dubai open today, with a place in the quarterfinals up for grabs.
Sabalenka has been on fire this season, and she arrived in Dubai having just picked up her first very major title at the Australian Open.
The 24 year old opened her account in Dubai with a 6-0, 6-1 win over American Lauren Davis. And that victory - that took only 59 minutes - means Sabalenka is 12-0 for the season, becoming the first woman since Naomi Osaka to pull off that feat.
Also worthy of note: across those 12 matches, she’s conceded just a single solitary set, which came in the final of the Australian Open against Elena Rybakina.
Jelena Ostapenko has been inconsistent so far this year, but as the defending champion in Dubai, today’s clash is a chance for the World No.13 to reset her season.
But the head to head record very much favours Sabalenka, who blew Ostapenko off the court 6-1, 6-2 when they last met in 2019.
Catch tonight’s game at 10 a.m. ET on DAZN, Tennis Channel, and TVA Sports.
2023 Honda LPGA Thailand
And finally after a month-long hiatus, the LPGA Tour is back today for the 16th installment of the Honda LPGA Thailand.
The tournament will see the return of several top players - including world No.1 Lydia Ko who’s set to make her season debut in Thailand.
New Zealand’s Ko enjoyed a stellar 2022, racking up three titles, a Vare Trophy and a Rolex Player of the Year award. And last week the 25-year-old picked up right where she left off with a win at the Aramco Saudi Ladies International in Saudi Arabia.
The 2023 Honda LPGA Thailand runs all week and tonight’s action tees off on the Golf Channel at 8 p.m. ET.
