Watch a potential Habs-Leafs playoff preview with Puck Talks at The Rec Room

Who could have seen this coming? Going into their matchup tomorrow, February 9, the Montreal Canadiens are only one point behind the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Leafs have two games in hand, but for a Habs team that was only expected to be competitive in the draft lottery race this season, it is quite an accomplishment. At 9-2-1 in their last 11 games, they are also one of the hottest teams in the league.

“I figured that [the Habs] would kind of be a bottom 5-10 team in the league and they would miss the playoffs and that hasn’t been the case,” said Scott Wheeler of The Athletic. “They have been one of the pleasant surprises alongside teams like Buffalo and certainly the New York Islanders.”

Tomorrow night, Wheeler will be part of the panel for the Puck Talks and The Athletic Toronto viewing party of the Leafs vs. Canadiens at The Rec Room in Toronto. The game will be shown on the movie-theatre sized big screen with full audio.

Alongside Wheeler, Justin Bourne and Tyler Dellow will also be panellists with Andi Petrillo of Leafs Lunch hosting. The event is free with RSVP, which you can do by clicking this link. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the event starting at 7.

What makes this game extra exciting, says Wheeler, is what it might be hinting at going forward. If the season ended today, Montreal would be third in the division, with the Leafs second, meaning a first-round playoff matchup for the first time since 1979.

“Saturday could be a playoff preview in that way. We will see how it shakes out, but the Habs are certainly a surprise. If they ended up playing Toronto in the first round that would be really exciting for everyone involved.”
